Bethesda Gardens Fort Worth is pleased to announce that our community has joined UNT Health Science Center to become partners in the medical center’s Seniors Assisting in Geriatric Education (SAGE) program. In addition to donating $2,500 to help fund the program, Bethesda Gardens has 15 residents participating in the program as mentors for young medical students.
“This is a win-win for both our residents and the medical center’s students,” said Debbie Bryant, marketing director at Bethesda Gardens. “Community service is important to us, and this partnership is another way that we are leading the world of senior living in Fort Worth, Texas.”
The SAGE program’s mission is to create solutions for healthier communities. SAGE places first- and second-year medical students from seven programs (physicians, physician assistants, physical therapists, pharmacology students, nurses, social workers and dieticians) into small groups and pairs them with a senior citizen volunteer.
Students make home visits as an interdisciplinary medical team where they apply their classroom education in the context and care of an older patient over a two-year period. The SAGE program was cited as an innovative medical education program in U.S. News and World Report in 2015 and 2016.
